Put simply, we take privacy issues very seriously at Good Shepherd.
You have privacy rights under a federal law that protects your health information. These rights are important for you to know. You can exercise these rights, ask questions about them, and file a complaint if you think your rights are being denied or your health information isn’t being protected.
Most doctors, nurses, pharmacies, hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and other healthcare providers must follow this law. Others who must follow the law include health insurance companies, HMOs, most employer group health plans, and certain government programs that pay for health care, such as Medicare and Medicaid.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services explains your rights in detail at
http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/hipaa/understanding/consumers/consumer_rights.pdf .
Questions about Good Shepherd privacy policies and practices can be addressed to
Paula Cooney, our Director of Medical Records, at (541) 667-3620 or pcoon@gshealth.org.
