Exercise Band Class: --Increase your strength and flexibility.  Perfect for seniors! 

 

Dates:           Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays   Starting May 2nd      

Times:          9:30-10:00am

Cost:              $15 for 10 weeks, $5 per resistance band

Self Defense & Personal Safety:  Students will learn to de-escalate or escape potential violent situations through assertiveness, confrontation and self-defense techniques.  Class format includes discussion and physical training involving unarmed defense, ground techniques, and effective use of your environment.  8 week course.

Beginning Karate: Improve balance, coordination, learn basic self-defense, get in shape, and have fun!

Tai Chi for Better Balance:   This is a community-evaluated evidence based introductory Tai Chi program created to reduce falls.  Class was designed for seniors but is beneficial for all and will introduce basic movement concepts and a simplified 8 movement form.  (10 week class)

Bellydance Basics:   Work on balance, joint mobility, flexibility, strength and isolation. No prior dance experience necessary. Great FUN for all sizes, shapes and ages! Per class payments or monthly payment w/discount available.

Irish Dance Class:  Must love fiddling!  All ages and fitness levels are welcome at these beginner Irish dance classes.  Learn solo and team dancing while improving posture, strength and stamina!  FREE!

Be Red Cross Ready: Get a kit. Make a plan. Be informed.  The Red Cross is here to make sure you are as prepared as you possibly can be for potential disasters and other emergencies. These events can strike suddenly, at anytime, anywhere. There are three actions everyone can take that can help make a difference.  Come learn about those actions and go away prepared.  Take any one of these FREE classes.

PRACTICAL SELF DEFENSE:  Students will learn practical, proven self defense techniques and strategies for personal safety and awareness. Class format* involves one hour of discussion about awareness of potential violence and dangers, followed by two hours of “hands on” physical training.  This FREE class is primarily geared towards women’s self defense but would benefit anyone attending.  For ages 10 and up.  Dress in comfortable clothes.

HOW WE HELP FAMILIES DRIVING SAFETY CLASS: No one ever wants to be in a car crash, but traffic-related injuries are the leading cause of deaths for ages 1-44. Good Shepherd cares about you and your family so we provide this family driver education class where parents and youth learn together safe driving practices. Our safety educator shares factual information and real life stories to illustrate the consequences of safe and unsafe behaviors.  We know parents want to help their youth build driving skills—working together we help to save lives.  Attend one, two hour class.  Free but please pre-register.

Virtual Dementia Tours:       FREE opportunity to participate in this nationally awarded simulation program that helps you understand the challenges faced by those with dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease.  Great learning opportunity for family members, caregivers, healthcare providers, and the general public.   Tours take approximately 30 minutes and a healthcare professional is available to talk with before and after the tour.  Must schedule an appointment prior to event.

FREE HELP WITH MEDICARE: The Hermiston SHIBA (Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance) Office has trained volunteers to help you with Medicare questions. This free service is available to people with Medicare, their families, and caregivers.

Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPS) Training:  CPS technicians put their knowledge to work through a variety of community-based activities. Classroom instruction is supported by hands-on learning for certification process. Important class for those working with children…scholarships available for the first five participants.

AARP Driver Safety Course: Accredited by Oregon DMV, this 6 hour defensive driving class helps to develop driving strategies for individuals 55 and older. An individual completing this course may receive a reduction in their vehicle insurance. Limited class size, so please call to register.

GRIEF ON THE INSIDE: Hospice & Healing Behind Bars. One of the most important issues we confront during our lives is the death of a significant person. But facing bereavement in prison is always amplified for those incarcerated. This class explores the challenges facing dying inmates and the skills necessary for prison hospice volunteers. Class intended for anyone interested in hospice work.

Quit Tobacco Help:  Have you tried to quit tobacco, but found you needed support? Contact our tobacco cessation specialist to schedule your free consultation. We know that quitting tobacco isn't easy, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. We tailor an approach to give you the best chance of success. Group sessions can also be scheduled by employers. Individualized Wellness Assessment: Schedule your 30-minute consultation with the Wellness Coordinator and receive a complete health/fitness assessment. Included are: health risk appraisal, cholesterol & glucose screening, body composition, and exercise prescription. Breathe Easier with Asthma Education:  Coming soon to Good Shepherd is a comprehensive self-management asthma education program for children and adults. Aimed at providing information about lung function, trigger control, medication, inhaler/peak flow usage, and self-monitoring skills. Diabetes Education*:  Classes offered in group or individual format and taught by Certified Diabetes Educators.  Comprehensive classes facilitate long-term self-management of diabetes.  GSHCS’s Diabetes Education Program has been Recognized by the American Diabetes Association for Quality Self-Management Education*.  For information call 667-3517.

 

Pregnancy, Childbirth, Child Care:

Birthing Classes:  Six weekly sessions to prepare the mother and her birth partner for a knowledgeable, rewarding and sharing childbirth experience.
