Diabetes Education

For new diabetics or those whose diabetes is not well-controlled, this is a program of self management education taught by Diane Brown, RN, CDE and Nancy Gummer, RD, LD, CDE. It deals with complication prevention and treatment for all types of diabetes, teaching balancing medication, exercise and meal planning for blood glucose control. Patients learn how to do blood glucose monitoring, how to do effective insulin administration and adjustment, and problem-solving skill for lifetime self-management. Classes are in four sessions over a two month period. For information, please call 541-667-3514.

The American Diabetes Association recognizes this education service as meeting the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education.

Exercise & Fitness

Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance for Seniors—This is a 12-week research study sponsored by the Oregon Public Health Division for seniors. The class is designed to increase mobility and to help prevent falls. A simplified 10 movement form and basic warm-up exercises will be taught. There will be a pre assessment before the class and a final assessment after the 12 weeks are completed.

Stress Reduction Class—Learn how to effectively handle stress. Learn about journaling, breathing techniques, time management, meditation, and simple nutrition/eating tips. Must pre-register.

Not Just A State of Mind: If you or someone you know needs help in feeling better about life, this class provides practical health tips and resources. The FREE class is for individuals 50+ and discusses depression and that the fact that it is a treatable illness.

Keeping You & Your Family Safe—Learn how to improve your neighborhood and reduce crime with the successful Neighborhood Watch program. Officer Franz with the Hermiston Police provides tools and training that empowers average citizens, while sharing strategies that will keep you safe. Everyone invited to attend this free and informal discussion guaranteed to present better tools for a better community.

Life Saving Techniques

CPR and First Aid classes taught according to American Heart Association guidelines. CPR
class includes adult, child and infant CPR and AED instruction. First Aid class covers basic
