Vice President, Fiscal Services/Chief Financial Officer

Jan brings over 34 years of financial management and administrative experience to the executive suite. His strengths include the ability to balance expenses in the face of changing volumes and healthcare conditions, maintaining a forward-looking vision for the financial cycle, and developing innovative ways to maximize collections and revenue.

He is a staunch believer in the professional development of his managers and front-line staff, encouraging and supporting continuing education and ensuring that career paths are clear and realistic.

Jan served as the Controller of the Riverview Medical Clinic in Vancouver, Washington during 1983 and 1984, coordinating all fiscal operations and policies, while also serving as treasurer on the clinic’s board of directors. From there, he progressed to Chief Financial Officer at the Mercy Forest Glen Hospital in Canyonville, Oregon from 1984 to 1988. At Mercy, Jan served as administrator of the organization’s health plan in addition to his CFO responsibilities of capital and operating budget management and daily cash management. He also managed operations of the hospital’s business office, including data processing, patient accounts, and credit and collections.

He transitioned to CFO duties at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Prineville, Oregon, serving from 1988-1994. At Pioneer, he honed his skills at reviewing revenues and receivables in order to set and maintain appropriate reserves. Jan kept a close eye on departmental budgets, coaching managers on planning and contingency management. He also managed the hospital’s purchasing department. Jan then served as Patient Financial Services Director at Tillamook County General Hospital in Tillamook, Oregon from 1994-2002 managing A/R and billing master files, and coordinating with several departments to maximize insurance reimbursement within contract guidelines, as well as developing policies, procedures and standards to align fiscal operations with the organization’s mission.

Jan has served at the Good Shepherd Health Care System for the last 16 years, first as accounting manager, then controller, and now as Vice President of Fiscal Services/Chief Financial Officer. He has wide-ranging responsibilities over five system entities, including a medical center, a 28-practitioner medical group, a retail pharmacy, and a foundation. Jan advised and oversaw a team of front-line managers in the analysis and streamlining of the diagnostic imaging admitting process, saving over $100,000 a year in lost revenue. He has relentlessly tracked down and rectified processes that led to excess accounts-receivable (A/R) days, reducing such days by 14; each A/R day reduction means around $170,000 to Good Shepherd’s bottom line.

He fully understands that financial viability is a function of not only revenue generation, but expense control as well. To that end, he has shown true innovation in leading the transition from separate admitting and financial counseling personnel into staff that can perform both functions. This reduced his workforce by 9.89 FTEs, at a savings to the hospital of nearly $500,000. This transition and other cost-cutting measures his managers have implemented have resulted in a 4.5 percent reduction in Patient Financial Services departmental expenses over the last four years. Jan keeps Good Shepherd at the forefront of effective corporate financial management. Good Shepherd’s latest venture employs an algorithm to determine presumptive charity care for incoming patients. This will allow for a far higher percentage of total uncompensated care to be “credited” as charity care, enhancing Good Shepherd’s non-profit justification. His tireless devotion to Good Shepherd’s mission fulfillment and financial viability have had a direct impact on Good Shepherd’s overall noteworthy financial success over the last several years.
