Expanded the waiting area while remodeling draw
stations in our Diagnostic Imaging, Laboratory and
Patient Financial Services Departments. Remodeled
the Diagnostic Imaging (DI) Lobby/Waiting Area and
Laboratory (Lab) Draw Station – a major renovation
project to improve patient flow and access to DI and
Lab services.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center (comprehensive
pain management) opened in June 2020.
•
Successfully remodeled our Nutrition Services
Department kitchen and dining area.
•
Remodeled Good Shepherd Urgent Care, Suite 120, and
the former X-Ray room in Suite 110 of the Columbia
Professional Plaza.
•
Expanded our Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation space,
making a difference in warm-up and cool-down portions
of therapy, allowing for new equipment installation and
also made more space to maintain social distancing
requirements during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Completed general building updates such as roof
replacements in the Broun Building (Home Health,
Hospice & Personal Home Care) and the Columbia
Accomplishments
Professional Plaza (Good Shepherd Urgent Care, etc.),
new flooring in our Family Birth Center and supportive
services corridor, remodeled reception desk in the GSMG
clinic, as well as multiple campus-wide modifications
related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
•
Opened an office in Pendleton to support our Home
Health/Hospice services in that community.
•
Implemented a “Quiet Time” program in our Family
Birth Center which included two periods during the
day that are promoted time just for mom, partner and
their newborn.
•
Oncology services (located in the Treatment Center)
began in November of 2019, led by Oncologist &
Hematologist Dr. Stephen Iacoboni.
•
Installed a large blanket warming station for additional
patient comfort
•
Installed a state-of-the-art Echo Unit.
•
Set up a new imaging-sharing option via secured
Cloud application for those entities that are not part
of our network.
•
Replaced the Good Shepherd Women’s Center
Ultrasound unit to now have two new and separate units
available for service.

340b Optimization of Key Infusion Products leading to
higher 340b savings.
•
Review/Standarization of Epic Order Sets (hospital) and
Beacon Order Sets (Oncology).

Change to “Hi School Pharmacy” group purchasing in our
retail pharmacy, resulting in additional savings.

Installation of “Drug Take Back” receptacle to safely
recycle and dispose of unused pharmaceuticals.
Receptacle is located in our Retail Pharmacy.

Installed new gastrointestinal and endoscopy equipment
in our Surgery Department.
•
New Ultra Cold Freezer for our Surgery Department.
•
Installed 108 new pieces of medical equipment
throughout the health care system.
•
Our Facilities team of 10 people completed over 6,773
work orders, installed/repaired/or replaced 251 phones,
maintained/monitored 120 security cameras, and
monitored/maintained electronic access to 215 doors.

Continued review of compliance program through
compliance committee
•
Education provided at new employee orientation and in
the fall for all employees as part of Skills Fair training.
•
Information Technology prepared Epic and Meditech
systems for COVID-19 patients, provided Epic build,
training and support for new service lines such as
Oncology/Hematology, replaced SAN to increase
availability and reliability of the health care system’s data,
and implemented a physician-focused Epic Certified
Trainer to better equip incoming providers for success
with documenting patient care in Epic.
•
Human Resources conducted retirement audits and
resolved outstanding discrepancies.
•
Human Resources completed monthly monitoring of
insurance costs and chair of GSHCS insurance committee
which led to no increase in health insurance premiums
and small adjustments in dental and vision benefits.
•
Saw significant growth in employed staff with 750
employees primarily to meet the demands of new
services and new physicians, as well as COVID-19
screening stations.
•
Grew the Good Shepherd Community Health Foundation
(GSCHF) in the public eye and Increased foundation total
assets to $8,053,537. Festival of Trees raised $23,000
while the annual Scramble for Scholarships
Golf Tournament was cancelled due to COVID-19.
•
GSCHF awarded $32,500 in scholarships to
22 employees and local students seeking degrees and
advancement in medical fields.
•
Expanded CareVan program services to include a
prescription home delivery service; working closely with
our Pharmacy Department.
•
Last fall our ACT healthy lifestyle/chronic disease
prevention program received an Oregon Health Hero
of the Year Honorable Mention Award from the Oregon
Office of Rural Health for making an exceptional
contribution to improving the quality of life for
rural Oregonians, and for sustained and successful
commitment to improving the health and welfare of our
community.

Our Diabetes and Nutrition Center started a successful
program called, “Diabetes Day” for patients to have
join endocrinologist and diabetes educator visits which
has increased patient satisfaction and improved A1c
outcomes for our patients with diabetes.
•
We continue to update our succession plans as we
manage several key retirements. During this past year, we
have seen several key management changes including:

Information Technology – Rob Risk retired and
Kevin Covert accepted the management role
–
Environmental Services – Ken Gummer retired and
Sergio Rodriguez accepted the management role.
–
Nutrition Services – Nancy Gummer retired and
Cassandra Zabel and Rachel Tate have accepted
management role for Nutrition services and
Diabetic Education.
–
Facilities – Eric Petersen passed away and Matt Moore
accepted the management role.

No reportable healthcare acquired infections in 2019 calendar
year.
•
Hosted 9 GoodHealth Radio Shows introducing new services,
healthcare providers and important educational information
(including COVID-19 updates) to our community.
•
Distributed 16 press releases to media outlets throughout the
region. All were picked up by local news outlets
(print, digital & radio), as well as some in Portland,
Bend & Tri-Cities.
•
Increased growth and interaction on social media networks
to help communicate with and educate community members
in our service area:

Auxiliary of Volunteers awarded $10,000 of scholarships to five
students pursuing medical education. $19,080 was awarded to
the Good Shepherd Health Care System to support the work
of various departments within the hospital, such as medical
equipment.

Scored 100/100 for MIPS in 2019 calendar year.
•
Successfully completed the Service Excellence Initiative
Accountability Audit.
•
Added additional translation devices across campus to
facilitate foreign language translation with patients.
•
Home Health and Vange John Memorial Hospice staff traveled
a total of 182,344 miles, completing 12,028 in-home visits since
acquiring patients in the Pendleton and surrounding areas.
